Today we’re going to talk about something that gets a bad rap it doesn’t deserve: fats
Fats are not the “bad guys” you’ve been lead to believe, they are really essential for human health!
At rest, our bodies prefer to use fat as a fuel because fat is actually much more energy dense than carbohydrates — providing 9 calories of energy per gram.
Fat plays a role in delivering fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) to the body and is a key part of cell membranes and many hormones. It also helps keep us full and reduces the chance of over-eating. See? Fat isn’t so bad after all!
Three types of fat
There are three main types of fat: saturated, poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated.
DNAFit Tip – The FTO gene impacts how well someone can tolerate saturated fat. Those with the AA genotype are significantly more sensitive to saturated fats and should consume less than people of other genotypes.
